November 2nd, 2016 marked an important day in the history of the Administrators of Gospel Music (AGM) as the 34-year-old organization’s first elected Board of Directors ratified the by-laws of the AGM; completing a yearlong process of re-branding and re-structuring.

In 1982, The AGM held its very first annual conference at the Shoney’s Inn in Nashville, TN. The idea to assemble a group of music administrators is attributed to Helen Pool of Singspiration Music and Waverly Conlan of Word Music. The organization was started out of necessity to help its members solve common problems in the music publishing industry and to build a network of community within the gospel music genre. The first conference focused on areas of licensing, performing rights, television rights, and copyright law; and featured 17 representatives from companies like Benson Company, Sparrow Records, The Baptist Sunday School Board, Cherry Lane Music, Maranatha! Music, Dawn Treader, Straightway Music, Word, Singspiration Music, Lorenz Creative Services, Triune Music, and Purifoy Publishing.

Since that first conference, the AGM’s membership has grown to over 60 gospel music administrators from around the world. In addition to providing important networking opportunities, the AGM continues to keep its members apprised of changes in the music industry. Each annual conference is packed full of relevant topics to educate its members so they can continue to provide excellent music rights administration services.

Until 2015, AGM’s approach had been focused primarily on music publishing administration, however, in October 2015, AGM formally organized as a 501c(6) trade organization and expanded its focus to include all types of gospel music rights administration. In March 2016, a “reboot” committee was appointed to develop a set of by-laws for the newly re-focused organization. And the AGM’s very first Board of Directors were elected at the conclusion of the 2016 AGM Conference that was held on October 13 at Grace Community Church in Brentwood, TN. At the first official board meeting on November 2, 2016 the Board elected the following officers:

Chairman of the Board: Christopher Stedman of Right Angle Music

President: Andie Rankins of Essential Music Publishing

Vice-President: Christy Robinson of Curb Publishing/CurbRecords

Secretary/Treasurer: Erin Ruth Schleiff of Capitol CMG Publishing

Director at Large: Lisa Stutts of Capitol CMG Publishing

Director at Large: Jonathan Bryce of Christian Copyright Solutions

International Director at Large: Steve Harmeling of Hillsong Music Publishing from Australia

In an ever-changing industry, AGM members have grown to value education, networking and sharing of information for all music industry stakeholders: songwriters, artists, record label administrators, attorneys, artist managers, churches, consumers and music publishing administrators.
